Fanning the spark (in Burundi)
The project aims to improve agricultural practices through technical assistance - aiming at water conservation and soil improvement, and stimulating use of fertiliser and improved seeds. Simultaneously crop- and healthinsurance will become available through the set up of mutual insurance companies, thus mitigating related risks / facilitating investments which in turn become more easily available as the mutuals will also provide saving and loan facilities. The project will initially be implemented in four "collines" (hills, in fact sub provinces) in each of the three provinces of Gitega, Munyinga and Makamba (so in total 12 collines, with on average 4,000 inhabitants each), thereby starting with a group of approximately 20 "farmer-researchers" per colline, subsequently expanding to the entire colline. Later on the interventions in each colline will expand to 2 neighbouring collines, thus eventually targetting 144,000 people.

I-Bank sustainable micro finance bank DR Congo
The project partners propose to set up "I-bank", a (community development) bank targeting MSMEs in peri urban and rural area's and providing a range of financial services (a.o. payments, savings and loans), adapted to their customers, e.g. MFI size loans will be available and will be provided based on trust / transaction history rather than collateral, while distribution is not only through regular outlets but also e.g. through shops and mobile banking. Like other banks I-bank will start in Kinshasa in order to create a base and as presence there is practically unavoidable for any bank in DRC, but will also expand to peri-urban and in future and very gradually to rural area's. The project's outcome is to have 200,000 MSME customers by end of the PPP, of which 34,000 loan clients. It's their financial inclusion, their subsequent possibility to get loans in order to expand their own business in a sustainable way that would underlie the justification to get a grant from the FDOV.

Not available; indicators do not really relate to the objectives of the project defined in numbers of people taking loans or bringing their savings to the bank. Presumably the loans taken will eventually lead to more business, jobs etc , but the relation is to indirect to be presented here in actual numbers.
The project is expected to create up to 100,000 jobs and positively impacts on as many families through increased incomes. ?????

Appropriate Solutions for Mechanisation of Agriculture in Ethiopia
The PPP will enable Ethiopian smallholder farmers and farmer's cooperatives to lease and buy affordable two-wheel tractors for soil preparation of the seed bed / fields, supported by a business case. Mechanisation in the agricultural and horticulture sector in Ethiopia is still in its infancy stage. The use of the more than 2,000 years old existing practice of oxen using a "maresha" is common practice for most farmers, but is also expensive for farmers without oxen. Four-wheel tractors are on the market but are too costly for cultivating small and scattered plots. Attempts to introduce 2 WT's for mechanization have failed because a successful after-sales and maintenance operation was not established. The Rumptstad two-wheel tractor (2 WT RS) is a tractor that can be used for soil tillage, seed drilling, weeding, transport, threshing and pumping on heavy soils. After the successful demonstrations and use of the RS tractors in different sites and demo fields in 4 regions in the highlands of Ethiopia it is expected that its use will contribute greatly to surplus yields.

Access to rural based financial services
The project enables the rural population in Ethiopia to have access to financial services through the setup of a network of agent banking services, thus making a contribution to the alleviation of poverty and contributing to agricultural production and food security. Currently only an estimated 8% of the Ethiopian population has access to financial services. In the rural areas of Ethiopia on average access to financial services requires the travel of 50 km and/or two days walking distance. Besides, due to the high costs of branch set up of Ethiopian banks an average customer has to pay very high transaction fees to gain access to financial services. The partners in this PPP propose to upgrade an existing and verified mobile banking system and platform technology to render financial/credit services to smallholder farmers in 4 regions in Ethiopia, using existing relations with MFIs and ATA (Agricultural Transformation Agency). The platform technology is such that it can be extended in line with future demand and expansion of data networks in rural areas of Ethiopia. Farmers will be in a financial position enabling them to buy agricultural inputs and increase yields and contribute to higher, sustainable food production and food security.

Innovative Business methods on High Value crops in Farmer based crop rotation in Ethiopia
The purpose of the project in Central and Northern Ethiopia is to design, implement and promote a business model, based on crop rotation in high value crops enabling Ethiopian smallholder farmers to transform their farms into tightly collaborating food-producing enterprises. Through this project the farmers will be embedded in a vital network of input supply, mechanization, knowledge, financial facilities and sustainable food markets. More than 10,000 farmers will be organized in producer groups, and will be trained and coached in the proper crop production systems, farm economics and marketing strategies, embedded in the standards of Good Agricultural Practices. By the end of the projects some 11,000 small scale farms in these regions will have been trained and are capable to improve their farming practices by themselves, eventually upscaling in other sectors of the agricultural economy (supply chain), in other agricultural zones (with same geology and soils) and regions in Ethiopia with similar farming systems practices (same variety of crops).

Sustainable Maize Programme in North Ghana
The project aims to upscale a succesful pilot maize programme in the North of Ghana. With this project the agricultural 'start-up'cooperative Masara N'Arziki wants to achieve economy of scale and financial sustainability and to introduce environmental sustainable farming practices. The PPP consists of the project applicant West Africa Fair Fruit (WAFF), teaming up with the farmer association Masara N' Arziki, the private agricultural company Wienco Ghana Ltd, the Ghana's agricultural research institute SARI and one Dutch NGOs: Solidaridad NL. The goal is to increase the quantity and quality of sustainable maize production in the Northern regions of Ghana by strengthening the farmers' cooperative Masara and through this providing capacity building on maize farming, conservation farming, and post-harvest losses. The project wants to engage 12,000 additional farmers in the North of Ghana lifting the production of maize at Masara from less than 28,000 tons to 96,000 tons.

Building a sustainable cacao sector in Ghana
The project aims to increase the production of sustainable cacao and marketing via a chain that also will develop traceability used for certification purposes by educating 16,000 cacao growing farmers, thereby increasing the productivity of the cocao grown by farmers. At the same time the project will promote farmers' intercropping with food crops and facilitate financial services to pay for inputs. The project will be implemented in the Ashanti cacoa growing region. The Applicant Continaf BV is a Dutch trader of cacao who sees an increasing demand for certified, traceable, sustainably grown cacao. In this project Continaf teams up with the Licensed Buying Company Adwumapa from Ghana to organise the traceability of cacao and the Agro Eko Louis Bolk Instituut, a NGO that runs research and extension programmes. With the Ghana Cacao Board, that is controlling trade and export of Ghanaian cacao, an MoU has been established to facilitate the traceability of the product flow.

Providing Analytical Services for informed Farming in Kenya
The project aims to improve land potential in Kenya by introducing soil testing services. By making use of spectral technology instead of wet chemistry the technology enables the project to execute the analysis in half an hour and is much better for the environment as well as the working environment compared to wet chemistry. It is an existing technique which has to be calibrated with respect to the local context. The project wants to make use of mobile labs to reach out to the farmers. The applicant is Tree of Knowledge partnering with its local affiliation AgriQ Quest. In order to have access to farmer networks, two NGOs, SNV and Heifer are added to the consortium because they have extended networks amongst the farmers. These networks will enable BLGG AgriQ Quest to promote their activities and have an infrastructure for their services. Besides the analysis of soil and animal feed, the service will also include training and advice in order to enable the farmers to translate the analysis results into specific measures to improve their land.

Sustainable food production fish
East Africa is facing a growing demand for animal protein. The current fish chain is not well developed. The chain lacks economies of scale and high quality inputs as well as processing, storage and distribution facilities. The goal of the project is to establish a well developed fish chain in Kenya by applying an integral chain approach. The chain starts with feed, fingerling, and ends with storage, processing and distribution facilities as well as marketing activities. The project also includes high quality intensive breading of fish.

Food security through improved resilience of small scale farmers in Ethiopia and Kenya (FOSEK)
Food demand in Kenya and Ethiopia is higher than food supply. Farmers have the potential to produce al lot more food than they currently do, but they don't have sufficient knowledge and input materials to accomplish this. Smallholder farmers in the coffee sector are almost always engaged in several other agricultural activities besides the coffee production. Part of them has received training in coffee growing and certification. But so far, there was no integral approach to improve the various activities and create linkages between the activities. Therefore, a consortium of Solidaridad (applicant) and partners SECAEC, Coffee Research Foundation Kenya, C. Dormans Ltd, Coffee Management Services Ltd, Sangana Commodities Ltd, Sustainable Management Systems Ltd, Nestlé SA and three farmers cooperative unions (YCFCU, SCFCU and OCFCU) wants to increase farmers productivity and resilience by improving sustainable agricultural practice and by combing coffee as a cash crop with production of a selection of food crops for local markets (intercropping). Trees like for instants macadamia can be used as shade trees in order to improve coffee yields and at the same time produce macadamia nuts with can be sold on the market and generate additional income for the farmer. Also other food crops like pumpkins can be used for soil conservation and prevents dehydration and at the same time produce food. Besides the food crop business case, the project also includes a dairy business case. A joint learning platform will be established together with Hivos, who has applicated a similar project proposal (FDOV12KE06)l. Both organisations have worked together on the project proposals in order to prevent overlap and will work together in the future in sharing accumulated knowledge and best practises.

Sustainable and Secure Smallholder Systems @scale
The goal of this PPP is to create opportunities for self reliance and economic growth for smallholder coffee framers in parts of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. Currently, due to limited knowledge, limited land availability, climate change and lack of technology, the coffee production of smallholder coffee farmers is low and inefficient. Besides providing training and input materials to farmers, the project will promote and facilitate the use of Biodigesters in order to provide the farms with energy and better manure for the land. Hivos will be responsible for the overall project management in this PPP. Other partners include ECOM and SMS, Kawacom and Tutunze (all subsidiaries of Ecom) and KENFAP, a federation of Kenyan farmers. These partners will mostly be involved in the training, certification and other technical assistance. Ecom will also provide for a credit facillity for farmers in order to enable them to buy farming input materials and for buying a biodigester. A joint learning platform will be established together with Solidaridad, who has written a similar project proposal (FDOV12KE04). Both organisations have worked together on the project proposals in order to prevent overlap and will work together in the future in sharing accumulated knowledge and best practises.

Flying food
There is not sufficient affordable protein food available in Kenya and Uganda. Insects can provide these proteins for low costs. The intervention aims at the development of a sustainable value chain, including rearing, processing, packaging, distribution and retail. In Uganda the target area is the Masaka region in the southern part of the country and in Kenya the target area is the Nyabza region in the western part of the country. About 4,000 small-scale cricket farms will be established in Kenya and Uganda. The Dutch parties have experience with insect rearing, but not for human consumption, since there is not much market for insect consumption in the Netherlands. In East Africa, grasshopper consumption is common, but the insects are gathered in the wild, instead of rearing them. Because of this, they are only available one season a year. When the cricket rearing farms are established, the insects will be available whole year round. The insects will be eaten and will also be processed into flour as ingredient for other products. Since grasshoppers are not suitable to rear, crickets are targeted for the project, they are easy to maintain.

Going Nuts
The project's aim is to develop the private sector by developing a peanut value chain in Malawi. It intends to find a solution for the aflatoxin problem which destroyed the (export) market for groundnuts. The project provides a twofold solution: 1) educate farmers and 2) setting up an infrastructure and peanut processing plant which can add value to peanuts and links small-scale farmers to the market. The 48,400 farmers that will be trained on growing and handling peanuts will contribute to increase yields and diminish risks for aflatoxin, improving the food safety. The production prognosis is from the current 2,000 tons per year to 20,000 tons per year within ten years. Afri-Nut can process groundnuts, develop new products and trade these on both domestic and international markets. The project will set up a peanut processing plant in Lilongwe, Malawi. Parties involved are Afri-Nut Company limited, DAPP Malawi and Stichting Humana People to people.

Southern African Partnership for Sustainable Cotton and Food
This PPP aims to support the enhancement of food security among cotton smallholders. The project intervention focuses on increased productivity and yields of cotton and food crops. This may be achieved through improved farming practices and access to inputs and farming services provided by the PPP. The project gives 13,000 smallholder farmers in the Manica province in Mozambique and 13,000 farmers in the Eastern Region in Zambia access to both household food and cash, ensuring that they have a more resilient livelihood capable of protecting them from food insecurity and nutritional deprivation throughout the year. The applicant is Solidaridad Network SA Trust, a networking organisation. The private sector is represented by OLAM, which purchases crops like cotton and food, produced by smallholder farmers. The farmers are represented via two producer organisations: FONPA (Mozambique) and CAZ (Zambia). Governmental partners are IAM (Cotton Institute of Mozambique) and the Cotton Board of Zambia.

Access to Sustainable Markets and Food Security for Nicaragua's Coffee and Cocoa producers
The goal of the project is to improve food security for 5,000 small-scale coffee (3,000) and cacao (2,000) farmers, by incorporating them into the coffee and cocoa supply chain in Nicaragua (in CN it were 3,000). The project is led by SNV and is following their Inclusive Business approach. The focus will be on the availability, access, and consumption of food, business management, technological innovation, productive diversification and access to local and international markets. Through UTZ certification and a direct commercial relationship established between small producers and Ecom, market access will improve. Through building the business capacities of small producers their income will improve. Technological innovations will support producers in improving their productivity and diversify their production with family orchards and gardens. The latter component will focus principally on improving families' food security and improving eating habits through nutritional education.

Protect and modernize Philippine banana production - PromoBanana
PromoBanana aims to protect, modernize and involve the Philippine banana sector and develop the agro-laboratory capacity for the benefit of every producer. The purpose of this project, based on a business case, is to build upon a local laboratory service capacity. This service will provide banana farmers with more efficient and precise tools for detecting and containing fast spreading diseases and optimise their application of fertilisers and other agronomic aspects. The project aims to close the traditional gap between small holders, medium sized farmers and large exporting plantations in order to ensure food security, improved resource use and build up resilience in an otherwise volatile sector. Currently, the livelihood of millions of people are at stake by the re-emergence of the devastating Panama disease. It cannot be controlled, cured, wipes out banana plantations and contaminates soils for decades. It threatens banana production throughout the world and on any plantation, regardless of the plantation size. This is on top of other diseases and pests, like the "Black Sigatoka" disease and nematodes. By bringing the latest and robust technology for modern disease management, soil analysis and crop monitoring along with capacity building (based on some simple measures) and technology adoption programmes, PromoBanana may rationalise and improve crop production. This may increase incomes of farmers and generates new and more jobs.

Development of sustainable dairy villages in Indonesia
The project will focus on two Cooperatives in West-Java, which will supply Frisian Flag Indonesia (FFI) with high quality milk which they can process into milk products. Dairy villages, Milk Cooling Points, a milk collection- and a milk pricing system will be set up, which will employ members of the cooperatives. Furthermore, an extension service of the Cooperatives will be trained in new techniques. It is indicated that currently, 75% of Indonesian milk and milk products is imported, 25% is domestically supplied. Agriculture industry development is a priority for the Indonesian government as it is considered an important way for rural households to farm themselves out of poverty. Through the milk products supplied in this PPP project, the Indonesian consumer will get better access to sufficient qualitative dairy products with high nutritional value. When successful, the approach of supplying FFI with milk through Cooperatives could be expanded to other Cooperatives."

Sugar: make it work
The goal of the project is to develop and implement an intervention strategy in the sugar value chain in Rwanda, that should enable a business driven approach to significantly increase the (economic and social) output of sugarcane agriculture. The local production of sugar cane has decreased over the years, where increased consumption has resulted into higher imports, rising to 60-80% of local consumed sugar being imported in 2012. The approach combines organizing small holder farmers and empowering local agri-businesses, including support in water management, precision agriculture and capacity development. Important element of the intervention is to "revive" 1,500 hectare marshland for sugarcane, through the introduction of improved water management systems, focused on drainage of the excess water. Another important technological element is the introduction of a combined sensor system, indicating the right harvest time of sugar cane, and early warning on incidence of diseases and pests. The applicant is TechForce Innovations (a Dutch company), providing support in setting up and managing business development projects. The main private partner is KSW (the sole sugar producer of Rwanda) who has developed, together with the Rwandan government, a plan to revive the sugar sector. The PPP includes 8 parties, of which five from the Netherlands, each with a clear role in the project.

SMASH Smart Adaptive Sustainable Horticulture
The project is aiming at developing practical and sustainable (from low-tech, low value protected to mid-tech and high-tech) greenhouse systems, for the specific condition in Algeria, Rwanda and South Africa. The project will do this by adapting and adjusting the extensive high-tech knowledge, technology and entrepreneurship of the Dutch Horticulture sector to be able to produce higher quality vegetables in the selected countries. The approach is based on the so called Smart Adaptive Sustainable Horticulture (SMASH) concept of GHI, WUR and TNO, in combination with value chain development. Final goal is to generate solutions that match with the local demand of investors. The applicant is GHI, as a private partner together with Cevital SPA, major food producer and processor from Algeria (for the high-tech variety), Klein Karoo from South Africa (for the med-tech solution). WUR/LEI contributes with plant production knowledge (in particular tomato plants), TNO Greenhouse horticulture contributes with the modular greenhouse system: SIOM, System Integration Optimisation Model, and BoP Innovation centre, who will contribute to inclusive innovations with lower-resource farmers, creating access to financial instruments and to impact investors. No local public partners are involved yet. In Rwanda the partner will be selected as soon as possible. The main activities are expert support and training. The project will focus in all three countries on tomato production.

Agribusiness innovation and sustainable entrepreneurship in South Africa (InnoGiyani)
In this project the private sector namely SPAR, the Manombe Cooperative Trust and farmers are ready to invest in production and marketing as soon as innovative niche products are identified and entrepreneurship capacity at related smallholder farms as business partners is built up. South Africa has a free market system and the position of a small farmer far from the markets is challenged by the mere size of his endeavour. The Giyani region is characterized by difficult socio-economic and agro-hydrological conditions, while the region has the best soils and a tropical climate. Development can only be achieved by innovating agri-business and the identification of niche-products. Building up the related capacity in innovating agri-business implies that the project cannot be commercial from the beginning. Investing in a PPP to establish an innovation facility will result in several benefits to facilitate sustainable entrepreneurship in the future. The project builds on a EU FP7 research programme with the object of isolating primary innovations through a trans-disciplinary participatory process.

Commercializing food security
The proposal is centred around developing the business model that will accelerate the uptake of agricultural technologies and foster income growth and employment in rural areas. In the Northern Highlands of Tanzania arable land is available but not used to its full potential. An integrated approach of introducing innovative agricultural techniques, and establishing links to warehouses and warehouse receipt systems, should give these local farmers the incentive to produce for the market. Increasing their production of staple foods for both growing urban markets and the food deficit rural areas in East Africa, is deemed the largest growth opportunity available to African farmers. The project is submitted by Quality Food Products Ltd. and it's partners in the PPP facility: New Bogaloo Ltd., NMB PLC, AGRA, EAGC., WUR/DLO Centre for Development Innovation. The Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs will act as an intermediary between Dutch agribusiness investors and the cluster of the PPP project. The Tanzanian Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Cooperation aims at being a nucleus for services/policy guidance to a modernized commercially-driven effective agricultural system by 2025 and will facilitate implementation of activities of the PPP project.

Development of a sustainable dairy sector in Vietnam
In Vietnam the demand for dairy products has been growing rapidly in the past decade and is expected to continue to grow even faster as a result of urbanisation, driving farmers from their land and income growth. This growing demand will lead to shortages in milk supply and therefore lead to high milk prices. Despite all economic growth in Vietnam, the percentage of malnutrition prevalence among children below five years old is still 20%. The awareness of consumers in Vietnam that this malnutrition can be addressed through nutritious milk is high. But with the high prices, milk is unaffordable for large segments of the Vietnamese population. Thereby, new non-dairy companies suddenly move into the dairy sector, since it is a chance for them to make profit. However, they do not have knowledge and proper quality assurance systems. The goal of the project is to enhance the ability of the domestic smallholder in the dairy sector in the Ha Nam Province to meet the growing domestic demand by developing smallholder dairy farmers with currently 1-5 cows, to professional and sustainable family farms with 20-75 cows. Rural households can farm themselves out of poverty and the Vietnamese consumer will get better access to more affordable and good quality dairy products with high nutritional value.

Growing out of poverty with potato
The goal of the project is to make Vietnam more self-sufficient in potato production and less dependent of fresh potato imports, by developing potato production in different and new agro-ecological zones in order to get year-round domestic supply of potatoes. The overall aim is to improve livelihoods and profitability among 175.000 small-scale farmers in the Red River Delta in North Vietnam (within the project: 2500 farmers). The partnership entails four partners. Applicant Fresh Studio Innovations Asia Ltd will manage the overall project implementation, extension system and applied R&D farms. Pepsico Vietnam will invest in a cold store facility, farm equipment, pre-finance the purchase of the seed potatoes, and will sign long term purchasing contracts with the farmers. Agrico BV will develop the potato contract farming system for PEPSICO, and Stichting Dienst Landbouwkundig Onderzoek will train the Fresh Studio staff in managing the applied R&D potato farms, develop potato protocols and train staff in extension methods. The project complements the ongoging G2G project of the Dutch Embassy and the Government of Vietnam on seed potato certification and quality control systems.

She Sells Shea-35,000 women entrepeneurs making a living
Women in Mali and Burkina Faso are facing recurrent incomes, food and nutritional insecurity because of lack of access and control of land, financial services, technical capacities, market access, quality inputs, year round income opportunities and gender constraints. Women traditionally generate some income by selling Shea nuts or Shea butter on the local markets. The overall objective of the project is to contribute to women entrepreneurship by creating a secured market for their Shea and provide a market for two other oil crops, Sesame and Moringa, allowing them to become a year round entrepreneur.
Olvea Burkina Faso, the private company in the partnership, will buy the nuts and grains of the oil crops from the women cooperatives. The secured and long-term contracts will allow business planning of both the cooperatives and the private sector. The project will invest in capacity building of 90 cooperatives to make them a strong partner in the value chain. This will result in more food and better nutrition for families, more feed for animals and more income.
Note: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is formal partner in this project.
As result of the project intervention 35,000 women in Mali and Burkina Faso will have market access for their Shea and will become year round entrepreneur through engagement in the Sesame and Moringa value chains. The women's activities will evolve from seasonal to year round and their income will increase.

Stimulating cooperative entrepeneurship by introducing irrigation
The partners in this project will set up a cooperative, which will coordinate the growth, processing, marketing, and sales of essential oils (based on Patchouli). Patchouli is a crop suitable for the soil and climate of Burundi and has an adequate market potential considering that the world market demand is bigger than supply. Thus far, Patchouli was mainly cultivated in East Asia, while earlier attempts were made, this is the first time Patchouli is grown at larger scale in Burundi. This project will make 1,000 ha of uncultivated land available for at least 30 years in the province of Makamba. In total 30,000 direct beneficiaries will profit from the work of the cooperative and 4,000 peasant household will be directly involved. The project also secures the financing of capacity building from the cooperative profits also beyond the life time of the project.
Note: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is formal partner in this project.
This project aims to:
- Develop sustainable entrepreneurship in Burundi contributing to poverty alleviation of 30,000 direct beneficiaries by irrigating 1,000 ha of land and introducing a cash crop
- Creating a cooperative-based business case of growing patchouli, selling the essential oils.

Cracking the Nut
"Cracking the Nut" aims at realizing an inclusive and competitive cashew sector in Benin and Burkina Faso. West Africa produces large quantities of raw cashew nuts. A low yield, lack of processing industry and insufficient collaboration between stakeholders makes that the added value is low and profits are made mostly overseas.
The objective of the project is to increase revenues for 10,000 farmers and income for 2,500 workers in the processing factories of the 2 countries where TDI, one of the partners, already has processing factories. The project will
- support smallholder farmers/cooperations with inputs and training
- strengthen the TDI processing factories through mechanisation
- set up 4 decentralised de-shelling units of raw cashew nuts
- establish 10 cashew apple juice factories and 2 Cashew Nutshell Liquid (CNSL) factories.
On sector and government level actions are taken to professionalise the sector. The business case is 3-fold: processing nuts with machinery to white cashew kernels, processing the shells into CNSL commodity used in the industry worldwide and expand micro finance loans to farmers for maintenance and renewal of their plantations.
Note: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is formal partner in this project.
An inclusive and competitive cashew sector in Benin and Burkina Faso, in which smallholder farmers, processors and service providers are enabled to increase productivity and efficiency in a collaborative way generating increased revenues/profits for at least 10,000 farmers and generating increased disposable income for 2,500 workers in the cashew processing industry

Inclusive milk supply chain development to increase food security
In the absence of an organised fresh milk supply chain, Bhutan relies on the import of milk to feed its growing population. This FDOV project will establish an inclusive milk supply chain to increase food and nutrition security, while improving incomes of smallholder dairy farmers in Bhutan.
Project activities include the establishment and/or strengthening of 40 Dairy Farmer Groups (DFG) in South West Bhutan, each with 30 farmers, the establishment of professionally managed milk collection centres (MCC), and the introduction of quality-based principles. It also includes the improvement of dairy husbandry practices and establishes a cattle feed production pilot near to the DFG's to warrant the sustainable availability and quality of cattle feed. On top of this, improved breeding using enhanced Artificial Insemination will be established, and general quality awareness among retailers and customer raised. End products include pasteurized milk and sterilized milk in different types of packaging. Besides urban retail, the project also aims at supplying fortified milk to schools on a (yet to be decided) government subsidised programme.
Note: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is formal partner in this project.
The project aims to:
- enhance Bhutan's self-reliance and food security by increasing the local production of milk
- improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Bhutan by turning dairy farming into a sustainable and profitable business, generating income and employment in the rural areas
- contribute to the health of the people of Bhutan by supplying safe, affordable and nutritious milk, including fortified milk to school children.

From Farm To Fork: Improving food security in 3 Egypt governorates
The local markets in Egypt for agricultural produce are underdeveloped: farmers are not well organized and the sector relies heavily on the use of pesticides and fertilizer and lacks knowledge of more sustainable alternatives.
The project will help to better organize the farmers in 3 Farmers' Cooperatives (FC). These FCs will grow into strong independent organizations with management capacity and collective bargaining power to make and fulfil contracts with traders and processing industries, especially the companies that are partner in the project (Spice Kingdom and Egyptian Farmers). The two partner companies in the project will invest in infrastructure and processing equipment. Government agencies will work on better service delivery to smallholder farmers. The set-up of farmers markets is foreseen in urban centres of the 3 governorates with a variety of horticultural crops. Thereby, the project enables better delivery of more healthy fresh produce and shorter and more efficient value chains between producers and consumers. The two NGOs are responsible for the training of the farmers (mainly CEOSS) and the management of the project (OXFAM Novib). The training aims to improve farming techniques by promoting the use of composting and manure instead of chemical fertilizers and by introducing new crops and crop rotation.
Note: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is formal partner in this project.
This project aims to:
- establish a sustainable business partnership between 3 smallholder cooperatives and 2 domestic companies that trade and process horticulture products in Egypt
- improve incomes of 15,000 smallholder families through productivity rise, new crop (varieties), changes in gender relations, value addition, employment creation and better bargained prices
- a facilitating environment for small-scale farmers by good governance, service delivery and supportive policies
- new local marketing channels for diverse horticulture crops that contribute to food security.

Fair Planet five year plan for Ethiopia
High yielding hybrid vegetable seeds are not available in Ethiopia. Most farmers use farmer saved seeds and exchange these seeds through traditional networks. This project aims at the transformation of subsistence farming to an agribusiness approach. To introduce high quality seeds in Ethiopia, Fair Planet has already started a platform with four leading seed companies to evaluate and identify varieties which are most suitable to Ethiopian conditions. In three Vegetable Excellence Centres testing of tomato seeds are already being carried out. Other vegetables will be tested in the coming years. This is called Phase 1 of the programme.
The current FDOV project is phase 2 of the programme and builds on the results of phase 1. In this project about 1,000 smallholders farmers will be trained to produce and market high quality vegetables with an expected increase of more than 5 times the current yield. This large scale demonstration programme will create a market for the high yielding seeds, after which the international companies can start their commercial activities. Two seed companies, Syngenta Seeds and East-West International participate in this second phase. An outreach to 50,000 farmers is foreseen in the project.
The capacity building of small farmers includes agricultural practices, soil solutions, entrepreneurial training and marketing opportunities. This is implemented by the project partners Fair Planet and the seed companies, in cooperation with the knowledge partners Haramaya university and the WUR. Through these knowledge partners, the project will closely cooperate with CASCAPE, which is a joint programme by the Netherlands and Ethiopia to improve agricultural productivity in Ethiopia. An online training (to be used for "train the trainers") will be developed combining the knowledge of seed companies, Haramaya and CASCAPE.
Note: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is formal partner in this project.
This project aims to empower smallholder (women) farmers by providing them with affordable seeds, entrepreneurial training and marketing opportunities. Thus reaching more than 50,000 households and 370,000 people.

Potato Processing in Ethiopia
The potato availability in Ethiopia is low and volatile, despite the large potential of potato production. Yields are estimated around 20% of the potential. Potato processing is the missing link in the potato value chain. The project objective is to establish a potato processing facility that will directly link smallholder potato farmers to the market. Off-take agreements with fair and consistent prices will result in an improvement of the smallholder incomes, and will start the fly wheel of more investment, higher quality and more productivity. The project covers the complete value chain: supply, processing and marketing. The project will focus on the development of a supply chain, a processing facility and a market for fresh potatoes and processed potato products. The project will sell its products in the Ethiopian market, which is currently a large existing but unmet market and/or served by imports. The project will provide farmers stable, transparent prices while rewarding them for quality produce. This will incentivize the farmers to invest in productivity and quality. In the long term, market efficiency and value chain sustainability will lead to increased local availability of affordable potatoes.
Note: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is formal partner in this project.
This project aims to improve food security in Ethiopia by driving market efficiency and value chain sustainability, ultimately leading to increased local availability of affordable potatoes. The project objective is to establish a potato processing facility that will directly link smallholder potato farmers to the market.

Dairy Farm Equipment, Ethiopia
Most farmers in Ethiopia are subsistence farmers, living around the poverty line. Most farmers also own cows. The dairy sector has a large potential for improvements. The improved dairy cattle population (better breeds) is still very small, and feed is often of low quality. A number of initiatives are currently undertaken to improve the dairy value chain in Ethiopia. A major problem identified in these programmes is the limited availability and maintenance of quality dairy farm equipment. This project focuses on this missing link in the dairy value chain, and proposes to develop production units for the production of dairy tools and equipment for:
- Measuring, storage and chilling of the milk
- Processing milk and producing butter, cheese and yogurt
- Packaging.
The production units will be developed at two existing technical colleges, both partners in the project. A new technical college will be established for regional coverage in Ethiopia. The estimated outcome of the project is that 10,000 farmers will double their income (or earn USD 500 annually) by increased milk and milk products production.
Note: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is formal partner in this project.
This project aims to improve the market efficiency and sustainability of the dairy value chain for regional markets in Ethiopia by producing, selling and maintaining dairy equipment locally. This includes the production of measuring, processing and packing equipment. This will increase the shelf life of dairy products. The estimated outcome of the project is that 10,000 farmers will double their income (or earn USD 500 annually).

SEED2FEED
Ethiopia's agricultural productivity, both for field crops and vegetables, is not living up to its potential. Besides factors related to the soil, there is concern about the quality of the starting material like seeds and seedlings as well as crop establishment after sowing. Seed quality is often poor and limited seed enhancement is currently practiced by the farmers. This project will set up a central project organization with a technical team to set up a large scale promotion and demonstration programme of seven years.
The objective of the proposed project is to test and disseminate promising seed technologies focussing on teff, maize, sorghum, wheat, barley and sesame. Activities are:
- Development and testing of product-service combinations
- Training of 1,000 key sector specialists
- Organisation of 1,000 full cycle crop demonstrations under farmer conditions
- Awareness campaigns inviting 200,000 farmers
- Business analysis of each product-service combination
- Development of business plans for each partner.
The project is strongly based in the ISSD (Integrated Seed Sector Development) programme Ethiopia. The ISSD programme aims to strengthen the development of a vibrant and market-oriented seed sector in the country, where quality seed of superior varieties is available and affordable for a large number of farmers.
Note: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is formal partner in this project.
This project will improve the productivity of sorghum, teff, wheat, barley, maize and sesame by adapted technologies for seed improvement and crop establishment reaching 100,000 farmers and resulting in a commercially successful business.

Strenghtening the horticulture export sector in Ghana
Due to poor agricultural inputs and practices and a lack of phytosanitary standards the horticulture export market has declined in Ghana. In 2014 the Plant Protection and Regulatory Services Directorate (Ghana Ministry of Food & Agriculture) imposed a temporary ban on vegetable exports from Ghana in response to warnings from the EU. The project objective is to increase horticultural export to the EU and other high end markets through inclusive business and sustainable entrepreneurship. The outcome of the project is
- a professional inspection and export certification system with protocols
- a phytosanitary survey and surveillance system for the sector
- good agricultural practices with technical assistance (factsheets) for certification
- infrastructure for sorting/packing/storage
- certification for front runner exporting companies.
By overcoming phytosanitary problems, the project aims to facilitate an increase in the export of Asian vegetables. Lastly, the partners want to develop a new supply chain of organically certified pineapples from Ghana to Europe.
Note: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is formal partner in this project.
Improved market access to the EU and other high end markets as a result of phytosanitary system development and improved compliance with internationally required production standards for Ghanaian horticulture products.

Every bean has its black
Unsustainable food crop production causes land degradation, environmental risks and low income and poor living standards for farmers in Guatemala. International markets demand high CSR standards that require investments at farmer level. Investments that farmers cannot afford to make. To overcome these problems in the productive sector for vegetables, especially string beans, green peas and Brussels' cols, the partners in this project wish to use the FDOV-programme to lift the whole value chain to a sustainable level, meaning increasing the number of sustainable farmers, increasing the productivity per hectare and increasing the number of hectares that are being used for sustainable farming. The market for sustainable vegetables in the US and Europe is growing and Guatemala acknowledges the need for more sustainable production.
Grupo Ceis in Guatemala and Fair Fruit in Belgium both belong to Durabilis, which is a Belgium Impact Investment Company. Durabilis invests and manages agribusiness value chains to stimulate sustainable development in South America and Africa. The companies work as intermediaries between producer and market: Grupo Ceis buys the products in Guatemala from the farmers and Fair Fruit is the importer and distributor in Europe. They work with low margins so producers receive better prices.
The project however will not only focus on the contracted farmers for supply to Grupo Ceis and Fair Fruit, but will also increase awareness about sustainable production amongst the bigger exporters in Guatemala and customers in Europe. Therefore, the three NGOs in the consortium will support the project with technical assistance to increase quality and quantity of the targeted vegetables and to educate the value chain as a whole.
Note: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is formal partner in this project.
A sustainable impact and inclusive economic growth for Guatemalan small-scale vegetable growers in the Guatemalan highlands in which rural communities increase their access to income sources.

Reducing Food Wastage in India
India is the world's largest producer of fruits and vegetables. However, from what has been produced 40% doesn't even reach the consumer due to food wastage throughout the whole supply chain, representing an economical value of € 1.8 billion. On the other hand India's overall food consumption is expected to rise by 4% per year. Tamil Nadu, the state where the project will be implemented, is India's fourth major horticulture producing state.
This project aims to reduce food wastage by creating an integrated supply chain, including cold chain infrastructure. The partners will work together to set up 20 polyhouses, a track and trace system and warehouses. Simultaneously, the consortium will train and capacitate local small-scale farmers, to enable them to grow their business, leading to sustainable increase of income and ultimately inclusive economic growth.
Note: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is formal partner in this project.
This project has the following goals:
- 10,000 small farmers are capacitated to sustainably increase their income
- A fully operational production, including supply and cold chain infrastructure, which reduces the food wastage with at least 30%.
The project is able to upscale in India.

Healty Business development programme
The core intervention of the programme consists of a two-year business development trajectory for the HSME sector (Health Small and Medium Enterprises) in Kenya, comprising (loan) products and Business Development Services (BDS, including training, coaching and managerial support) that help HSMEs improve their performance and grow their businesses. The package of products and services is designed in a tiered fashion, roughly targeting three different market segments: the low-end (Segment C) of the market, which needs instructions on the basics of running a health business and getting the required systems, processes and procedures in place to be able to up their performance and apply for a loan, the mid-market HSMEs (Segment B) and higher end (Segment A) HSMEs, which will be serviced with help with accessing larger loans, high level trainings (mini-MBAs of about 3 weeks) and strategic advisory services and process management support to help them sustainably expand their businesses based on sound financial planning.
Special attention will be paid to the health and the economic position of women. The project will target HSMEs which provide maternal and child health services, and the Business Development Service package focuses particularly on improving the quality of maternal and child health services. Additionally, the project comprises a capacity building programme that helps county governments effectively manage their new task of public health service delivery, amongst other through stimulating involvement of HSMEs in the provision of public health services, through PPPs or Service Level Agreements and the like.
Note: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is formal partner in this project.
The HSME business development project aims to realize the following outcomes:
- 20% increase in number of patient visits and revenue and an on average a 10% increase in staff base of the HSMEs which have completed the two year business development programme
- Improved clinical performance of at least 60% of the HSMEs which have completed the two year business development programme. At least 80% of the respective HSMEs have improved clinical performance of their maternal and child health service package
- Volume of loans disbursed to HSMEs which have completed the programme of at least USD 1,000,000 per year, totalling USD 5,000,000 after 6 years (5 years of implementation), decreased barriers to access to financing for female health with the banks engaged in the programme
- HSMEs are participating in county government public health service delivery.

Food security via vertical integration of a new Kenyan pot chain
Currently, Kenya's dependency on maize as main crop threatens the food security situation in Kenya, because yields are declining as a result of diseases. This threat has been acknowledged by the Kenyan authorities, who decided to choose potato as a substitute for its current dependency on maize. Potatoes are produced by smallholders, who often use the potatoes which are rejected by the market as seed potato. As a result of this and because of poor agricultural practises in general, yields are very low. Another problem is that smallholder farmers receive little money for their potatoes which they sell to middlemen. Due to lack of alternatives and storage facilities, individual smallholders have little bargaining power and have to sell their potatoes to a middle man for very low prices.
This project responds to this situation by working on three pillars, namely:
- The creation of a sustainable - fully operational and profitable - potato chain in Kenya
- The realisation of a potato enabling environment
- The realisation of sufficient potato knowledge.
Activities include
- the testing of new potato varieties in Kenya
- the development of two service centres to sort, store and handle the seed potatoes
- capacity development of smallholder farmers
- the organization of farmers in cooperatives and commercial markets
- capacity development of KEPHIS to handle the certification
- improving tax conditions to realise a fair level playing field.
Note: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is formal partner in this project.
This project aims to realize food security in Kenya via vertical integration in a new Kenyan potato chain with as a result: 143,000 tons of top quality Kenyan consumer potato. An improved income for 12,250 smallholders of which 60% are women.

Food for all Project in Kenya
Due to limited land availability and recurrent droughts as a result of climate change, about 75% of the inhabitants of the Eastern Kenya region are food insecure. The project wants to solve this problem by combining the production of bananas and vegetables with high value agricultural products like milk and French beans. This project focusses on smallholder farmers since they are producing about 95% of the national volume of fruits and vegetables and many of them are located in the eastern region.
Smallholder farmers lack access to quality inputs and storage and marketing opportunities. Within this project, cooling, processing and packaging facilities will be constructed. In order to increase the yields of all products, nurseries will be established and the farmers will be trained in climate SMART agriculture, livestock production practices and will be supported in obtaining certification. The certification is in order to guarantee the quality for export, but also for the local market.
Note: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is formal partner in this project.
The project aims to Improve the livelihoods and resilience of households, through improving access and availability of good food and livestock products, thereby reducing food and nutrition insecurity in Eastern region of Kenya. The project targets 48,500 households in the Eastern region of Kenya.

Organic Farming Unleashed: A Joint Effort to Build an Enabling Environment
Two partners in this project, Prograin SRL and The Organic Village BV, identified the production and sales of Moldovan organic grains and seeds as a business opportunity. They also recognised several obstacles. Within the project the partners intend to create a complete value chain for organic grains and seeds. The Czech NGO People in Need, with many years of experience in Moldova agribusiness, will start to conduct trainings and monitoring of farmers that want to start producing organic. By the end of the project, 20,000 ha of arable land will have been converted to sustainable organic farming. At the same time, the two companies will supply the farmers with organic seeds and fertilizers and start with setting up a certified storage and processing facility in the port of Giurgiulesti. Public partner the Academy of Sciences of Moldova will do research and work towards registration of additional organic seeds and fertilizers, as well as preparing an incentive system for organic farming. The project will also arrange for separate transportation facilities and a laboratory to test the organic produce. And last but not least, the project will provide the farmers with access to international buyers of organic grains and seeds.
For the 250 farmers involved in the project, the conversion to organic, is expected to make their farms more sustainable. Not only ecologically, but also economically. Prices for organic grains tend to be a lot higher than for conventional, and less volatile.
Note: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is formal partner in this project.

Sustainable and affordable poultry for all
Key problem in Myanmar is the low agricultural production and limited level of competition in feed and poultry, which causes prices of poultry to be about twice as high as in neighbouring Thailand. Yet, poultry is the most important source of animal protein in Myanmar. The SAPA project (Sustainable and Affordable Poultry for All) targets the poultry chain, and corn as the most important feed source for poultry. A DoC hatchery will be established under a Joint Venture by DHM and Belgabroed, with a capacity of 7.2 million DoC's per year. Furthermore, a broodstock farm will be build and broodstock farmer will be trained in order to produce eggs for the hatchery, and 250 broiler key farmers and 500 workers will be trained to exemplify good farm broiler management using quality management systems. In addition, and parallel to corn variety trials, a corn capacity training programme will be established using 25 corn trader-suppliers reaching out to 2,500 corn farmers using improved inputs and latest technologies. Sustainability of the project is strengthened through the establishment of a broiler farmer Club (50 members), workshops and seminars for dialogues on safe poultry production with key stakeholders in Myanmar.
The project claims to increase supply of chicken meat by 18 million kg per year, equivalent to the annual consumption of 1 million people, and an overall direct created value of USD 40 million per year or USD 160 million over a 4 year project period. Income is generated for about 6,700 people.
Note: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is formal partner in this project.
The aim of this partnership is to improve food security and rural incomes in Myanmar through the introduction of improved farming practices, resulting in lower cost prices and productivity gains in corn and poultry farming.

PPP Macadamia Value Chain Enhancement
Malawi is a major producer of Macadamia nuts. This is performed mainly by large farms. Only 1% is produced by smallholders. Partners want to enlarge the involvement of smallholders in Macadamia nut production. Their theory is that because of lack of access to good planting material, knowledge of production technique and lack of access to and knowledge of the market Macadamia nut production is not interesting for smallholders at this moment.
The partnership will supply better planting material (through Sable Farming Ltd) and train 3,000 farmers (DAPP Malawi) through a system of Farmer Clubs. Furthermore, they will develop a macadamia agronomy and management module at the Agricultural course of the Mikolongwe Vocational Training college in order to secure the capacity. The project will develop 4 buying/storage centres and expand the processing facilities.
Through this approach the smallholder farmers will gain skills and knowledge, work with the appropriate instruments, have reliable access to fair market conform prices, have access to planting materials. As a result, they will improve their annual income and self-reliance.
Note: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is formal partner in this project.
The project aims to connect smallholder farmers and macadamia nut producers to the Macadamia nut value chain and improve each link to the chain.

Production and marketing of high Premium Rice in Central Java
In Indonesia, the demand for rice is increasingly growing, while the production is decreasing. Farmers produce low quality rice and face many challenges in the production. Their position in the supply chain is weak and they have difficulty getting into new markets. The partnership will therefore motivate, train and coach 10,000 farmers in Central Java to produce high premium rice for the Indonesian market, using certified seeds and organic fertilizers and pesticides. The market for this high premium rice is increasing annually and the financial benefit for farmers has proven to be much higher. To strengthen the position of the farmers in the chain, the partnership will professionalize 58 LDPMs (business unit within farmer groups) into a strong business organization, with know-hows, capabilities and influence. Which gives them more bargaining power, makes them a strong and reliable supplier and at the end a trustworthy client for loans from the bank. The position of women in LDPMs will be strengthened:
- they will become the owner of harvest and post-harvesting equipment
- they will use improved techniques to improve quality and quantity of the harvest and increase their income.
Total additional production will be 2,453 tons of rice grain per year (+20%), and the income rise for male and female farmers will be on average € 76 (+42%) per year. The income of female labourers in threshing will rise 30%.
Note: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is formal partner in this project.
The goals of the project are:
- Increased rice production to meet the increasing demand for food/rice
- Improved market efficiency and sustainability of the rice supply chian
- Inclusive business with impact on small farmers, employees and entrepreneurs, including women entrepreneurship.

Development of sustainable bean value chains for smallholders to increase food security in Zimbabwe
Malnutrition in Zimbabwe is a challenge. More than one-quarter of all children (28%) are stunted. Dry beans are an important source of protein. The production and productivity of dry beans dropped seriously due to the decline in the agricultural sector during the first decade of the 2000s. This project's objective is to increase production, sales and consumption of dry beans in Zimbabwe, to reduce poverty and malnutrition of smallholder farmers and improve their food security and farm sustainability. The project focuses on sugar beans, which can be grown multiple times per annum as mixed or intercrop.
The project presents the following activities (building blocks):
- Development and release of high-yielding dry bean varieties via Single Seed Descent (SSD) selection in order to achieve maximum yield potential with pre-conditions regarding stress resistance
- Introduction of a model for seed multiplication and marketing of dry bean seeds
- Improvement of smallholders' agricultural practices and knowledge and provision of market access to smallholder farmers, which enables them to increase dry bean production at a profit.
A farmer group of 5,000 farmers will be established and trained on good agricultural practices, financing, market linkages, and nutritional and agricultural benefits of dry beans.
Note: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is formal partner in this project.
The project aims to:
- Double the average dry bean yield in ten years: from 0.4 tons per ha to 0.8 tons per ha
- An annual increase in the production of dry beans of more than 50% by year 10
- Reduce Zimbabwe's dependency on imported dry beans by 12,000 tons
- Increase the protein intake of at least 100,00 smallholder families through a higher dry bean consumption.
